that middle bro o' mine

I had just returned from a job interview/hiring down at Tybee. I had considered just heading for the school for the cool, but I decided to stop briefly at home to pick up a few things.
I was barely in the house when a knock came on the door.
Say what?
It was Ronnie!
He had walked over to my house, from Memorial Hospital, on the off-chance that I would be here to give him a ride back to his neck of the woods.
(Literally, right, y'all?)
Why had he been in the hospital?
Yesterday, he apparently got mugged (honestly, what idiots would mug a homeless man?) and had some cuts on is back and arm and chest. The hospital had been good enough to put him up for the night, but now they were done.
His timing was perfect.
Here it was a Tuesday, a non-teaching day, and all of my time was his for the taking.
Fine.
But first, I had him check in with Sue Crowe, as she worried about him, too.
That was a good move. She needed something to be down about her toilet. Could he come fix it for her?
So, off to Causton Bluff we rode.
Then, off to Home Depot for the needed parts. Then to the liquor store to fetch her some beer and cigarettes. I followed him in to make sure he didn't help himself to anything there.
He did not.
He wanted to, but when I questioned him about that 40 he wanted, he didn't put up much of a fuss about letting it stay there.
Good!
Back to Sue's house, to make her toilet flush once again.
Success!
Then she gave him a beer.
Sigh.
She wasn't doing well. She had fallen last week and her right hip was still giving her pain. Had she been to the doctor?
No, she had not.
So, we loaded up and the three of us took off for Southern Urgent Care.
By this time, it was early afternoon. Time for some lunch!
Ronnie and I walked down to Publix and got some food, then returned and kept Sue company while she waited for her turn.
Ronnie was being his jovial self and we three really had a good time together, joking and kidding around. I very much enjoy these increasingly rare times when he is (relatively) sober.
Finally, Sue was done. No bones were broken! Hooray! But she had sprained the muscle and would need some medications, including prednisone.
No problem! The CVS was right there in that same complex, between the doctor's and the grocery store.
Back to Sue's house once more! Her housemate was home, so we updated her, got Sue settled in, and left.
Back to his neck of the woods for Ronnie! He went to his tent and returned with - two phones and a charger? Not hardly. One phone and two chargers.
Better than nothing!
I'm to see him again tomorrow morning at 11. The phone is currently charging and I'll find out tonight if it's the "current" one.
(Get it? A little electrical joke from me to you!)

We remembered not to be looking up into the sun this time.

Right now, I've got to get ready for Sandy to pick me up for trivia tonight. It'll be the two of us, plus Barbara and Kathy, and we're having free dinners with our past winnings!

Hi, Tina,
Just wanted to say hello. Of course you know that i can't pick out the cards i send. So this one is sorta mushy - different.
I got your letter last night and wrote Smitty a few minutes ago and thanked him for the new shoes. They are really nice shoes. They are the New Balance MX 409's, size 11 EEEE. The fit is perfect.
Thank you again for the new socks and for the sudoku book. You are awesome! :-) I got the call-out from the mailroom a few weeks ago. It was like Christmas in September!
Last week was very slow at work. It was audit week. I don't think i was allowed to check out a single tool. Of course the weeks leading up to audit week have been much more busy with odds and ends being squared away, cleaned up, and even hidden. Imagine that.
Also last week, i passed the 3-year mark on my detail. As a personal reward i took Monday off. Not one person at work said anything good or bad to me about it today - so that's good.
The story of (David) Quarterman's alligator wrestling is amusing and amazing, maybe even astonishing. Wow.
My brother Ronnie may actually be setting a life changing course by choosing to go to jail for bodily salvation. May God let it be so through his son Jesus the Christ of God that Ronnie may also choose to accept Jesus as his Lord and his Savior. And may God show his power by way of a completely and totally changed mindset and life style of Ronnie. And may God get glory from it, in Jesus' name, amen.
It's been a long, long time since i've heard of read the names Hokie Davis and Steve Sullivan, together or separately. I had no idea that they too are in contact with Ronnie. "A long, long time ago, I can still remember" how Steve, Hokie, and this guy camed Tony SMith used to really, really live the stereotype life style of long-haired, hippy type, white boys. Somehow we all lived through it - amazing.

7 pm on the 7th!

Christmas Day was a bit of a mixed bag.

For breakfast, I made a sandwich with the rest of the gyro from Tuesday. Dessert was the rest of the pecan brittle from Sunday. The meal was served on the Elvisware from the bfe.
Most excellent!

Amazingly, I had two presents to open!
My cousin Penny gave me a sun-moon light catcher, with a glass ball painted to glow in the dark.
Ooooohhh!!! Major coolness!!!
My outlaw Kathy gave me an Estee Lauder eye makeup kit, with more colors than I know how to use.
Oh, my!!! It's been years since I used eyeshadow!
The Melaness said she would send a package after the new year, as she has recently had reconstructive surgery and isn't quite back up to snuff.
I told her, "no worries, dearest. You know you don't need to send me anything - except love!"
My brother Smitty called to see if I'd heard from Ronnie, as he had a plate of food for him.
I replied that I had not, but I had heard from Ronnie's girlfriend on Wednesday, when he and she were together.
(Hooray for fb messaging!)

Then, I did something completely different - I joined Live Out Loud! for Christmas dinner at Sushi Hana! I had so enjoyed it back in May, but haven't had an excuse to go again...until now!
Very nice!
There were eight of us for dinner: Robb, Bryan, Ben, and Mike, all of whom I already knew from either LOL! or Movies in Pooler. Then three new folks: May (Mike's girlfriend); Jo; and Michele, a tour driver with Old Town Trolleys. Quite a lively group!
I splurged and had an apple-infused chilled sake - very lovely in every way and served in a martini glass! Then I splurged again for the Sushi Trio dinner! Wow! Miso soup and a ginger salad, to start, followed by three pieces each of tuna, salmon, and yellowfin, with a spicy tuna roll to finish it up. Definitely sated my appetite for seafood!
After our 2 1/2 hour visit, we headed in separate directions. Some went with Ben in search of the geocache in Triplett Park. Others headed off for diversions elsewhere... like back to Savannah, where I had a movie date with Barbara and Sandy!

The movie, "Joy", was not at all what I had expected from the previews.
I had looked forward to the new Jennifer Lawrence-Bradley Cooper offering for so long...I ended up quite aggravated at having been misled by the advertisements.
Instead of being another one in the same vein as "Silver Linings Playbook" or "American Hustle", it was just a biopic. About someone famous in the Home Shopping Network world, which I never intend to visit.
That was definitely a bummer.
Yes, it was nice to share the time with the girls.
Yes, it was nice of the clerk to load us down with "Kung Fu Panda 3" fortune cookies.
(Hey, what's not to like about a fortune cookie or two or three? Even when the fortune seems zanier than usual?)
I just didn't appreciate being duped into watching a movie about a woman who invented a better mousetrap - I mean, mop.

So, after our usual hour-long gabfest in the parking lot, I headed home to wash the taste out of my mouth and try to reclaim some Christmas spirit.
That's when I saw it.
"Bruce Almighty".
I had pulled it out a few days ago and left it on the coffee table.
Sure, let's pop that into the computer!
Great idea!!!
A healthy dram of Morgan Freeman, with a main course of Jim Carrey, was exactly the meal I needed!
Guess what?
There was even mopping in it.
Remember the scene when the sadsack first meets God?
Then, later, the two mop the floor together.
At 7 pm on the 7th, as promised at the first meeting.
Very nice.

i thank You, God, for small favors.

popcorn, pastry, pizza, AND a penny!

Today has been so full of wonderful moments!!!
I was up around 8 AM.
Yes, I realize that is not my usual time to waken. Rather, once upon a time, it was not my usual waking hour. However, since there is no oak tree to block the morning sun from my bedroom window, I have been rising earlier of late. Actually, ever since the "spring forward" time, I have been rousing about 7 AM, but I usually pop my synthroid and go back to sleep for an hour.
As the summer heat starts stirring mercury pretty hard by ten AM, I've been going ahead and getting up while the day is still cool. Today, I'd had breakfast and it wasn't even 9 AM.
But, wait! Today is Tuesday!!! That meant I could catch a cheap kid movie this morning!
Quickly, I studied my cinema schedules. Which ones to see today, tomorrow, and Thursday? Then what to do afterward? How to best use my time and my gasoline?
Done!
The pelicula de la dia would be "Book of Life"! It was at the Regal Cinema, out by the school.
Okay! What else to do out there?
Well, I could always go to my office, do a bit of catching up on my blogs...but I also needed to go downtown to pay my water bill, as that one slipped up on me while I was on vacation. (It's due TODAY.)
I took a quick shower, grabbed the satchel with my office stuff, grabbed the water bill, grabbed Ronnie's new Chick-Fil_A card, and out I flew!
I even made it there right as the movie was starting! Hooray!
Afterward, I used the coupon for the $2 popcorn special. There had been no time to stand in line for it earlier. Now, I would have fresh treats for later. Hooray!
After a quick phone call to Sue Crowe about Ronnie, I realized it would be tomorrow, at the earliest, before I would see him. Tomorrow will be July 1st. By that time, the June special, of free medium waffle fries and free large soda, would have expired. So, I treated myself to that special! Yum!
Now, to the school or to downtown?
My car was up for a drive, so off to Veterans Parkway and Broughton Street!
Amazingly, I found a parking spot only two blocks from the utility service center. Wow! What good fortune!
Within twenty-five minutes, the bill had been paid and I was back to the car.
Now what? I still had at least thirty minutes on the meter. Might as well make the most of it!
I was parked between the CVS and Panera. First, I went to CVS, managing to speak to a pharmacist about the bug-bite rash on my left arm, left foot, and left side. I took it as a good sign that he was not mortified by the appearance of the rash! He recommended Benadryl cream and that's what I bought, using the last of the free money on the gift cards from Crescent Resort.
Still had time on the meter!
I had not yet picked up my free birthday pastry from Panera, so I bopped over there. The asiago sourdough was only three dollars, so I bought a loaf. The birthday goodie I chose? A pecan roll! I love those things!
Back out to the car, I put my buys into the trunk and saw it. A shiny new penny was behind my car, at my feet.
Right place, right time!
I had just one more item on my agenda: the pizza special from Papa Murphy's. My boys of summer had scored the five runs on the Sunday afternoon game, but then the rains had come. That game had been completed tonight, so the Dollar Monday ticket had meant the large, five-topping pie was only $5. Not only for me, but also for my first niece, her husband, and their foster son! (Thanks for coming to the game with me two days in a row, y'all!)
Now, I'm home again with my treasures! Nearly free popcorn! Free pecan roll! Nearly free pizza! Free anti-itch cream! Free soda! Free penny of love!
The free fries?
Oh, they're already gone.
(smile)
I wonder what the evening will hold?
But for now, "Married With Children" is on to entertain me while I munch on sourdough bread.

happy 53rd, ronnie!

Here we are, at the Golden Corral again!
I had signed him up for their "Good As Gold" club and they had awarded him a free lunch for his birthday.
For the past few years, I have taken him out for a meal and a movie for his birthday. Last year, we dined at Carey Hilliard's and saw "Tammy". (Hey, he's the one who picked it! I guess he hadn't expected the "go to rehab" message in it. I found it to be priceless!)

I had printed out the certificate a couple of weeks ago.
You see, his birthday was actually on Monday, but I had not been able to take him then.
That's because I had no way of contacting him except to ride up and down Skidaway Road in hopes of espying him.
Yesterday, I finally saw him, sitting on the side of the Chevron, with several of his buddies.
I made a "date" with him for our birthday lunch at 11:30 AM today. I even enlisted the aid of his amigos to make sure he would remember.
They were also to make sure he brought his two phones up to the site and charged them, so I could get his phone service reinstated.

I arrived early and he was there with two of the same buddies from last evening, plus one more.
He even appeared to be neat and clean!
He was also a little tipsy.
Already.
But did he have the phones with him?
Hahaha! Ha haha!!!
What a silly question! Of course he did not, not either of them, whether charged or dead.
He, nor the three with him, could recall where I was taking him, just that "sister T" was taking him out for his birthday lunch.
I guess it's good they remembered that much.

We had a really good lunch visit! As his was free, I had only to pay for mine.
(Did I get the senior discount? Not even close. LOL!)
Throughout the ninety minutes we were there, we talked of tents and phones and tents and rehab and tents and his kids and grandkids and tents and his three-day return to the hospital in mid-June for chest pain and... tents.
Have you spotted the recurring theme?
Even with the medical scare, in which he had staggered to the Chevron and had them call an ambulance, his main function today was to get me to buy him a tent.
Wouldn't he rather have a working phone so he could call for help?
Nope, he'd prefer the tent. The one he had was ripped by a tree limb during a storm, as well as having a busted zipper on the door. The mosquitoes ate him up every night.
His son, when told of his papa's preference for the tent responded, "Phone can't keep the bugs off."
That echoed Ronnie's sentiments exactly.

So, off we went to Walmart, in search of a tent.
We settled on a Coleman 4-man tent, with WeatherTec features.
We got a can of bug repellant, too.
That's not to say I don't hold him having a phone to be of high importance. However, he's had three phones in the last six months. If he doesn't find it to be of value, he'll just lose it again.

I treated him to a movie, too. This year, he chose "Terminator Genisys".
He liked it very much... and so did I.
I hope we will be able to do this again next year.

almost heaven, west virginia

On my trip back to Savannah, I was stopping every hour.
I just felt tired, though I think I was just not ready to go home and be faced with any more "Ronnie drama".
So, I had stopped at the rest area north of Daytona, but still in Florida.
Then, only an hour or so later, I had stopped at the Georgia Welcome Center.
While there, I had a nice conversation with a couple from New Jersey. About what? Gardening, of all things.
At the very next exit, Exit 3, I was off again.
Just back on the road and already stopping again.
Time to put some gas in the car, I told myself.
And so I did.
Then, as I was about to leave for the highway, I saw it.
It was right beside the gas station.

A Dunkin Donuts shop.
I immediately swerved in and parked.
With my $5, 4-year-old, gift card in hand,
I strode in.
This was the day!
I took my tuna salad croissant
and iced coffee with almond milk
out to the patio and enjoyed the sun,
watching the clouds.
All done, and feeling refreshed,
back on the road I went.
No sooner did I merge onto I-95 N than a brown pick-up truck lurched across two lanes of traffic, right in front of me, to catch Exit 6.
On its tailgate, it bore only two letters, in the classic outlined style.

hahaha!
"Very funny! I get it!" I said aloud to the sky.
And justthatfast, in my head rang a chorus of voices.
"You are still loved."
That's all they said.
And I was in tears for the next forty-five miles.

You see, the gift card was an inside joke, of sorts.
The woman in charge of the Science Bowl at Armstrong is, quite proudly, from West Virginia, mentioned in John Denver's song.
She had given me (and others) the gift card in thanks for helping with the Science Bowl back in... 2011? 2012?
Dunkin Donuts was not a place I frequented, so I put the card away. Every so often, I'd pull it out and look up the site on the internet. Only one store was still open around here, but not on my paths of travel.
One time, I even headed out there, but it was closed.
I had placed the card in my car, to have it handy on the road.
I had even almost used it down in Florida, but I had zoomed on past the exit, on my way to the Science Cafe and Daytona.
Then, just yesterday, I had caught my eye in the mirror. "Once upon a time," I thought to myself, "I knew I was loved. I knew Mama always loved me, no matter what. Now, I don't have that anymore."
It wasn't a pity party thought. No, just a matter-of-fact assessment.
Then a series of fortunate coincidences combined to tell me I was mistaken.

It was incredible good fortune that a Dunkin Donuts had been right beside the Shell gas station.
It was incredible good fortune that I had been delayed at the Welcome Center by the gardeners.
It was incredible good fortune that I had left at just the right time to be in just the right place to see the message-bearing truck as it took Exit 6.
Incredible good fortune.

alive and well with my youngest brother!

Today, I arose early.
No "CBS Sunday Morning for me, thanks.
I was off to see my youngest brother,
up in Summerville, GA.
In between visiting my BFF and her family, celebrating the 3rd birthday of my youngest niece, and the upcoming trip to North Carolina, I scheduled this visit, too.


It's been increasingly important to my peace of mind that I go visit Tony.
Given all the woe of late with our middle brother, Ronnie, I needed to see Tony with my own eyes, verify that he was well. Let him see that I was well, too.

How wonderful our visit was, too!
We ate burgers and sandwiches and ice cream from the vending machines as we talked about our brothers.
Rather, he ate chocolate-covered ice creams while I watched enviously.
(smile)
We talked about his two grown children and his three young grandchildren, what scant information I have on them.
We talked about the boys of summer and wondered aloud what would become of the Sand Gnats and pro baseball in Savannah.
We talked about my trip to Hiram and my adventure in Alabama and my upcoming journeys to North Carolina and Florida.
We talked about the program he is now eligible for to the prison, to be transferred to a transitional home, to prepare him for release back to the world of temptations. (Yes, he has assured me that anything illicit one could possible want, especially alcohol and other drugs, is obtainable in prison. He has abstained, knowing God has a better future in store for him.)
We talked about the new bathroom our oldest brother would (hopefully!) be installing for me next week.
We talked about the lawn wars my pot-smoking neighbors, the Sullivans, are waging on me, via the city. (I told him that Diane and I had hopefully come to an understanding about that.)
We talked about money, too, and the minor physical aches that are part and parcel of getting older.
Then we had our photo taken!
Actually, two were shot, as he had obtained two tickets for that little luxury. Sadly, the other photo did not print well, but we do have this one to mark the occasion!
See, I think I haven't been to see him since his birthday.
That was in late October.
After that, my weekends were "just full", as Calvin would say. Between film festivals and music festivals and volunteering at the Lucas Theatre and school responsibilities, I simply have not headed in that direction. No visits to the BFF, no visits to the peace Guy, no visits.
Plus, I never go there after the weather chills. Waiting in the line for the security check can be brutal under those conditions.
I'm so very glad he had thought to have our photo taken.
That one action means the world to me.
(smile)

At 2:30 pm, we hugged our fare-thee-wells
and I left.
I stopped at the Wendy's right outside the prison, to have a bite. Most of the $20 in quarters allowed for the visit had gone to goodies for Tony, not me.
Armed with my lemonade for the road, I went back to my car...
and found a penny...
a bright bit of copper right by the front wheel.
Right place, right time.

family outings, day 1

I didn't even have coffee this morning. I called up my middle brother, Ronnie, to see if he wanted to go to IHOP for breakfast.
He answered with an enthusiastic affirmative!
Such a good meal together we had!
I dined on his favorites, sirloin tips with onions and mushrooms and sunnyside-up eggs.
I had grilled sausage and fluffy pancakes with old-fashioned warm syrup.
What an uplifting way to begin the day!

About four hours later, I was in the company of his darling daughter, my first niece!
She is going to school for a teaching certificate, in addition to raising two boys and working full time.
That's really put a crimp in our socializing opportunities.
She made a hole in her schedule just for me today.
We dined on Mexican fare at La Parrilla, a place we had not visited together, but both of us liked.
She had the younger boy with her, but Lee is such an easy child to be around and has a smile that can brighten the darkest day.
Ah... so relaxing to be with her again!

The evening found me ushering at the Lucas for "The Princess Bride" - marvelous! Nothing like storming the castle with Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin! "As you wish", my dear! How excellent to see Peter Falk again, too. (I had caught an old episode of "Columbo" earlier, the one with Johnny Cash as a murderous singer. It was very good!)
Then some fierce "True Romance", pitting my man Christian Slater against Christopher Walken and James Gandolfini. No worries, Alabama has his back, and she is fierce!
Along the way, I got hugs from friends and a business card from a local photographer who wants to "capture your [my] joy for life".
Seriously!
I need to send Kinzie Ferguson an email right now so we can get started on the Joy project!
